Crime: Chacon Cold Case Homicide

Date: 1999-07-25

Location: not known location

It was 3:30 a.m. on July 25, 1999, when nearly 100 people gathered at The Car Wash, an after-hours nightclub at 1180 West Hastings in Vancouver. Richard Chacon was the manager that night, a 31 year old from Huntingdon Beach, California, who had been living in Vancouver for about three years.Richard was a creative, talented guy, who had a short-lived talk show on CFUN radio and was in the process of developing a local television show. When a fight broke out between two men, Richard was quick to intervene. He came up behind a blonde-haired man in a Hawaiian shirt, and tried to pry him off of a dark-skinned, possibly black man.A shot suddenly rang out and the blonde man doubled over. He had been shot in the stomach. Seconds later, Richard fell to the floor, hit by the same bullet. The first man survived, confined to a wheelchair, but Richard Chacon did not.Immediately following the shooting, someone shouted, “My God, Trevor – you just shot someone.” Investigators believe that someone inside the club knows who Trevor is, but so far that have not been able to identify him.Richard is sadly missed by his family, who says that he always liked Vancouver, even commenting on the fact that Canadians don’t put up with crime. Clearly, Richard took that to heart.Investigators would like to solve this case. If you have any information please contact investigators at 604-717-2500. If you wish to remain anonymous contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Crime: Duece and Crook Robber

Date: 2014-09-24

Location: not known location

Surrey 14-149764 Surrey RCMP is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying suspects involved in a series of service station and convenience store robberies this past month. Between September 24th and November 6th, 2014 ten robberies occurred at various gas station and convenience stores throughout Surrey. The similar method in which these robberies were committed suggests that the same suspects are involved. In a majority of these robberies, a stolen Dodge Caravan has been reversed into the locked businesses front doors in order to gain entry to the store. After gaining entry, the suspects proceed to steal a large amount of cigarettes and, in some instances, lottery tickets. Vancouver Police are releasing a composite sketch of a man who allegedly exposed himself to a 13-year-old girl at English Bay last week. On July 2nd, the young girl was spending the afternoon at the beach with friends. When her friends left to get something to eat, she stayed behind to watch their belongings. Crime: Fake Tix

Date: 2015-02-14

Location: not known location

Counterfeit Tickets Ticket fraud is a major criminal activity in the Lower Mainland. The numbers are astounding, and are evident at nearly every concert in the city- large and small. It is thought that one criminal group alone is responsible for sales in the millions over the past 4 years. The tickets are very authentic looking and are often sold through sites like Craigslist. The sellers have plausible stories, like they are selling on behalf of their moms. They give contact numbers; unfortunately, they use pay as you go phones that are tossed once the event wraps up. Police have a number of suspects in these cases. Unfortunately, it is rare that victims come forward in these cases, making prosecutions almost impossible. If you recognize these individuals, or have information on suspected ticket fraudsters, call Crime Stopperrs at 1-800-222-8477.

Crime: Kim Fofonove

Date: 1978-10-07

Location: not known location

Kim Fofonove was finishing his degree at SFU & was due to head to Regina in the spring, as he had been accepted into the RCMP. Away for the Thanksgiving long weekend, at a rugby tournament, Kim joined fellow teammates and others at a local pub to celebrate their team’s winning of two games earlier that day. Leaving the bar only minutes before closing, Kim exited alone and was found shortly thereafter, unconscious on the ground. Despite attempts to resuscitate him, Kim was never to regain consciousness, and would die in Vancouver hospital three days later. Although the RCMP ruled the death as caused by misadventure, the details of that tragic event have never come to light; the person or persons responsible for Kim’s senseless death have never been brought to justice and this case remains unsolved. Kim’s mom, Vivien Fofonove is now 87 years old. She has lived for years wondering what happened & why somebody killed her youngest child. Somewhere there is somebody who knows something. Somebody told somebody else. Maybe they’re parents and grandparents themselves now, all these years later. Maybe there’s no reason to fear telling the truth now. Maybe somebody needs to clear their conscience. One thing’s for sure: Vivien Fofonove and her one remaining son, Terry, need to have the peace of mind of knowing. If you have information on Kim Fofonove and want to remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).

Crime: Larue Cold Case

Date: 2002-12-31

Location: East Side, Vancouver, BC, Canada

It was New Year’s Eve 2002 when an anonymous letter was opened by staff working at the Vancouver Police Department’s Public Service Counter. The letter referred to a Vancouver sex trade worker who had disappeared at the end of November, one month previous. The writer described the woman, admitted to killing her, and even apologized to her family for taking her life. He said he was surprised there had been nothing in the news about her disappearance and asked for the victim’s name to be mentioned in the news paper, so he would know who she was. Investigators believe the letter writer was referring to Danielle Marissa Larue, and while her body has never been found, they believe she has been murdered. Her 24 years had not been easy, with physical and sexual abuse beginning in her childhood. She entered foster care at an early age and ran away to the streets in Prince George when she turned 13, turning to drugs to ease her pain. She was always fiercely protective of her younger brother and sister, but Danielle became addicted to drugs and ended up working in the sex trade to support her habit. She had been living in the Downtown Eastside for longer than five years. It’s been more than a decade since Danielle went missing and police received the letter. The person who wrote the letter knows what happened to Danielle and where her body is buried, and seemed to be remorseful. Perhaps a tortured conscience will finally bring answers, justice and closure for Danielle’s family. If you have any information with respect to this incident please provide your anonymous information to Crime Stoppers, at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS). Your tip could be worth a cash reward to you!

Surrey RCMP is alerting the public and requesting their assistance in identifying a fraudster who has been recently preying on elderly people and their generosity. The scam involves the suspect advising homeowners that his car has been towed nearby and he needs money to retrieve it. The suspect will sometimes offer the homeowner an item as collateral before a return payment is made which turns out to be stolen property. Crime: VPD Cold Case Gurholt

Date: 1981-09-04

Location: 575 Richards Street, Vancouver, BC V6B, Canada

Some people end up living difficult lives, a long way off from where they started. Kristin Gurholt’s life came to an end in a Vancouver alleyway behind 575 Richards Street on September 4, 1981. She was naked and her skull had been fractured. Her clothing was scattered around her and a suitcase containing all of her personal effects was found nearby. It was 2:00 in the morning and Kristen had just been evicted from the Marble Arch Hotel in the Downtown Eastside. Investigators believe she met her assailant when she entered the alley and that the severe attack may have been the result of Kristin rejecting sexual advances. Kristin was just 34 years old, a petite woman with blue eyes and brown frizzy hair. She had come to Canada when she was only four, from Norway, and grew up in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, in a loving family with five sisters and three brothers. Kristin was a creative child, who loved to read. She did very well in school, and particularly excelled in music. She studied piano and received honours in the Royal Conservatory of Music exams. She went on to earn a masters degree in education. It was while Kristin was in university that she was diagnosed with schizophrenia. She was married and had a son, who family say was her greatest joy and the love of her life. The marriage ended after a few years, and when her son was seven he went to live with his father in B.C. Kristin moved to Vancouver and would take the bus on weekends to see him. Kristen, who was sometimes called Sunny or Misty, died a violent death in a dark alley, leaving behind a 12-year-old son. Her family has endured 32 long years of waiting for justice. For them, the memories of the sweet little girl who filled their house with music have been forever tainted with the painful knowledge of how her life ended and the fact that no one has been held accountable. If you have any information with respect to this incident please provide your anonymous information to Crime Stoppers, at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS). Your tip could be worth a cash reward to you!
